What is I/O psychology?

Industrial/organizational psychology is the science of people at work. It applies psychology, behavioral science, research methods, and data analysis to understand and improve employees, teams, leaders, and organizations.

I/O psychologists address questions with direct organizational impact:

  • How do we select the right people?
  • What motivates employees?
  • What makes an effective leader?
  • Why do people leave organizations?
  • What contributes to workplace stress?
  • How can organizations successfully manage change?
  • How can data help us make better decisions about people?

The M.S. in Industrial/Organizational Psychology at IU Indianapolis prepares students to apply this science to real organizational problems through training in employee selection, training and development, performance management, motivation, leadership, teams, research methods, and data analysis.
