Admissions requirements by program

Applications are invited from qualified students with at least a bachelor's degree (or equivalent) from an accredited institution of higher learning in mathematics or in the physical sciences or engineering with a strong mathematics background.

A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 is required. The minimal mathematics background includes at least 13 credit hours of mathematics courses beyond the calculus sequence (single and multivariate calculus and differential equations).

Any applicant who has a bachelor's degree (or equivalent) from an accredited institution and shows promise of successfully completing the degree requirements will be considered for admission.

A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 is required.

The minimal mathematics background is an undergraduate course sequence in univariate and multivariate calculus (at IU Indianapolis, MATH-I 165MATH-I 166, MATH-I 171, and MATH-I 261), plus a linear algebra course (at IU Indianapolis, MATH-I 351 or MATH-I 511). Applicants who lack only the algebra course may be admitted conditionally and then must complete such a course as soon as practicable.

Applicants must have a four-year bachelor's or equivalent degree in mathematics, statistics, computer science, data science, engineering, or a related field. Interested students with a three-year degree should contact the department for information. Applicants who lack only the algebra course may be admitted conditionally and then must complete such a course as soon as practicable.

For those candidates who do not have background in the aforementioned fields, case-by case evaluation will follow.

Students will be admitted to the Department Mathematical Sciences if they applied to this department and will be admitted to the Department of Computer and Information Science if they have applied to the Department of Computer and Information Science. The graduate committee of each department will be responsible for evaluating the case-by-case applications.

Graduate Non-Degree program admission

If you cannot provide all application materials by the deadlines listed above, we encourage you to apply to the Graduate Non-Degree program through the IU Indianapolis Graduate School.

This program will allow you to take courses towards your intended degree program, and you may transfer up to 12 credit hours into the M.S. program, subject to graduate committee approval. Email mathgrad@iu.edu for more information.

If you’re not seeking a degree, but want to take graduate courses in mathematics for personal and professional development or for licensing requirements, you may also receive approval to take courses under this classification.
