Collaborating with multiple research partners to get the best results
The Neuroscience Department is an interdisciplinary program in the School of Science. We collaborate with other departments within the school and outside, like IU School of Medicine. We also work closely with hospitals and companies in central Indiana.
Here are the collaborative partnerships we have established:
The Indiana Alcohol Research Center (IARC) is a Specialized Research Center which focuses on the elucidation of the biomedical and psycho social factors that contribute to alcohol abuse and alcoholism. The Center was established in 1987 by a grant from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) of the National Institutes of Health. The NIAAA is the major federal agency supporting research into the etiology, pathogenesis, treatment and prevention of alcoholism.
The Indiana ARC has enjoyed 20 years of continuous funding from the NIAAA which has resulted in the establishment of a collaborative and multi-disciplinary group of scientists who come from many different scientific disciplines including the departments of Medicine, Psychiatry, Psychology (Purdue and Indiana University), Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Medical and Molecular Genetics, Cellular and Integrative Physiology, Pharmacology and Toxicology, Anatomy and Cell Biology, Ophthalmology, Neurology, and Radiology.
Researchers in the ARC are studying the biological and molecular basis for differences in the way people drink, and the consequences of heavy drinking. The Center collaborates with researchers across the globe. We have been particularly active in providing selectively bred lines of rats and mice which differ in alcohol preference, in assisting investigators with genotype-phenotype correlations, and in the use of controlled intravenous administration of alcohol to maintain blood alcohol concentrations within prescribed levels. We are an exceptional venue for alcoholism research with a training grant and numerous investigators with externally funded alcohol research programs, in addition to their participation in the IARC.
The Center is also highly involved in educating Indiana policy makers regarding the science basis for diagnosis and treatment of alcoholism and other substance abuses.
The Indiana CTSI supports the entire state of Indiana, led by the health science schools of Indiana University (IU) and Purdue universities (PU).
Other key community and business partners from the state also participate. Anantha Shekhar, MD, PhD, is the director of Indiana CTSI.

The School of Science Institute for Mathematical Modeling and Computational Science (iM2CS) is a cross-departmental school-level unit which promotes interdisciplinary research and educational activities, integrating mathematical and computational approaches to address problems arising in various areas of science, engineering and medicine.
The Institute of Psychiatric Research (IPR) is an integral part of the Department of Psychiatry at Indiana University School of Medicine. IPR is home to research faculty, staff, post-doctoral fellow, and graduate and professional students. IPR has been extending the boundaries of psychiatric research by:
demonstrating that glycine is a neurotransmitter
developing the serotonin hypothesis of depression
helping to establish the genetic and the biochemical substrates of alcoholism
assembling the largest sample of bipolar families for genetic studies
developing an animal model of anxiety
IPR is also home to journal editors for Psychiatric Genetics, Current Alzheimer Research, Current Aging Science, Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, and Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research. IPR faculty serve as mentors to PhD and MD/PhD students in the Graduate Program in Medical Neuroscience. One of the unique features of the Program in Medical Neuroscience is that it combines the analytical expertise and methodological approaches of the neurobiological and behavioral sciences to study neural function in systems from basic molecular processes to the whole organism and includes opportunities for both basic and clinical research.
Mission Statement
Utilize advanced imaging technologies to further the understanding of brain structure & function through the study of healthy individuals, clinical populations, and translational animal models.
Investigate the influence of genetic variation on imaging phenotypes including brain structure and function in health and illness as well as treatment response.
Provide training and experience in structural, functional and molecular neuroimaging research.
Develop, assess, and validate emerging technologies.
Optimize the use of existing molecular and functional imaging methodologies including PET, fMRI, DTI, MRS, perfusion and morphometric imaging;
Develop advanced image processing and analytic methods to address emerging neuroscience questions.
Advance the state of the art in clinical care for brain disorders including neurosurgical planning and image-guided therapy.
Life-Health Sciences Internships connect life and health sciences undergraduates with research and professional experience internships on and near the IU Indianapolis campus. This program helps students to explore their career objectives and future career pathways while also fostering valuable professional connections between students and faculty and staff. The students belong to a community of interns and mentors who support one another throughout the internship experience and beyond.
The mission of the Stark Neurosciences Research Institute is to advance our knowledge and understanding of the brain and behavior through research and training programs that apply the latest innovations in biomedical discovery with the central goal of informing ongoing and future treatment of neurological and mental disorders through outstanding science."
The scientists, students, and staff of the Stark Neurosciences Research Institute, in partnership with health professionals of the Indiana University School of Medicine, government, and industry, are firmly dedicated to this mission. Our success will depend upon and reflect a commitment to integrity and excellence in our endeavors and a desire through research to ultimately improve the outcomes for persons suffering devastating disorders of the nervous system.
