Explore the universe at IUPUI

Physics is a fascinating field that encompasses matter, energy, and all of the interactions among them. It seeks to answer questions about the tiniest subatomic particles and about the universe itself.

Here in the Department of Physics at the IUPUI School of Science, we’re a tight-knit group of faculty and students dedicated to learning together and discovering the workings of the universe. Our undergraduate and graduate programs feature small, interactive classes that will challenge you, and opportunities to join cutting-edge research projects.

Why study at IUPUI?

Because we’re in downtown Indianapolis, we’re close to five hospitals, the Indiana University schools of Medicine and Dentistry, and the Purdue School of Engineering and Technology. We’re also surrounded by countless science and technology companies. Through internships and undergrad research, you’ll have opportunities to collaborate across disciplines, across campus, and across the academic and business communities.

Our mission

  • Deliver a high-quality education in physics to our undergraduate majors and our graduate students.
  • Provide high-quality courses in physics and astronomy to students in other disciplines at IUPUI.
  • Conduct world-class research in select areas of physics.
  • Serve as a resource for the university and the community in central Indiana, and complement the roles played by IU and Purdue within the state.
  • Develop and foster an environment in the department within which faculty members can thrive as they contribute to the teaching, research, and service missions of the university.
