Welcher Lectureship

Dr. Melanie M. Cooper is the Lappan-Phillips Professor of Science Education and Professor of Chemistry at Michigan State University.

In October 2024, Dr. Cooper was inducted into the National Academy of Education. She developed a system to approach curriculum transformation, where she developed Chemistry, Life, the Universe and Everything (CLUE) and Organic Chemistry, Life, the Universe and Everything (OCLUE).

Her research is aimed at developing evidence-based approaches to teaching, learning, and assessment.

Dr. Frank J. Welcher was a renowned professor of Chemistry from 1932 to 1978, serving as a faculty before IUPUI (now IU Indianapolis) was officially established in 1969. Dr. Welcher was a prolific author, teacher and world-wide conference speaker.

In 1978, the IUPUI Chemistry Department organized the Frank J. Welcher Symposium on Analytical Chemistry with chemists traveling from around the world to participate. In 1990, the city of Indianapolis proclaimed a day as the Frank J. Welcher Day; the same year Purdue University bestowed on him the Honorary degree of Doctor of Science.
