Open to students in grades 9-12, registration for the 2018 Brain Bee at IUPUI is now open. The competition will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, December 8, in Lilly Auditorium in University Library.
The International Brain Bee aims to motivate high school students to learn about the brain and inspire the pursuit of careers in neuroscience research. The IUPUI Departments of Psychology and Biology sponsor the local Brain Bee as part of the School of Science’s commitment to advancing scientific minds and fostering community interest in the sciences.
“We are proud to host the Indianapolis Brain Bee each year as it gives us an opportunity to meet top students and introduce them to our undergraduate psychology, biology, and neuroscience programs,” said Beth Neal-Beliveau, Ph.D., associate professor.
A twist on a traditional spelling bee, the Brain Bee requires competitors to answer questions about the brain and nervous system until only one student, the champion, remains. The winner of the Brain Bee at IUPUI will receive a renewable $2,000 scholarship to IUPUI along with an expense-paid trip (flight and hotel) plus one parent to attend the National Brain Bee competition.
Participation is free and online registration is open until December 1. Questions for the Brain Bee come from the Brain Facts book, which can be downloaded for free at brainfacts.org/brainbee.
The IUPUI Department of Psychology will host optional study sessions to help prepare competitors on Nov. 10, Nov. 16 and Dec. 1. These sessions will be held on the IUPUI campus in the Science Building, room LD137. Each session will cover different Brain Bee topics. For more information on these sessions, email Neal-Beliveau at bnealbe@iu.edu.
