The Center for Earth and Environmental Science (CEES) studies how pollution affects water systems, and how water resources affect human health. The center’s extensive research program examines current and emerging threats to central Indiana’s water resources.
Director: Dr. Broxton Bird
Assistant Director: Dr. Victoria R. Schmalhofer
The Center for Urban Health (CUH) seeks to enhance health and sustainability for urban populations, with an eye toward both environmental legacies and emerging threats. The center promotes discovery by building research collaborations, providing seed funds for new research areas, funding graduate fellowships, and sponsoring educational activities such as public lectures and a Visiting Scholars Program.
Director: Dr. Gabriel Filippelli
Research in the Center and with our global collaborators is directed to understanding the biochemical mechanism underlying the development of hydrocephalus and using this information to find better ways to treat this disease. The goal of the Center is to foster collaborative efforts locally and globally and to train members of the next generation of hydrocephalus researchers.
Director: Bonnie Blazer-Yost
Manager: Sarah Connors
The INSECt Center aims to revolutionize global agrifood systems through a multifaceted approach, fostering a paradigm shift towards a bioeconomy that develops novel products and promotes sustainable practices while unlocking financial benefits and enhancing long-term profitability across the agrifood industry.
The IU Institute for Human Health and Wellbeing —bringing together experts from health sciences, psychology, social work, and beyond — is committed to advancing scientific discovery in the health sciences and translating that knowledge into actionable solutions for complex health challenges in Indiana.
Executive Director: Stephen Boehm, Ph.D.

INDI is dedicated to advancing nanotechnology-focused research, education, and outreach across campus and throughout the surrounding region. With a growing body nanoscale characterization, fabrication, and analytical instrumentation, coupled with technical expertise and proposal development services, INDI not only boosts research collaboration but also provides enhanced student development via training and integration into coursework. The impact of these efforts span INDI’s diverse 30+ faculty members (from four different IU Indianapolis schools) to surrounding Universities, local industry, and the neighboring K-12 community. Together, INDI is not only meeting the needs of current nanotechnology researchers, but is also working to foster the next generation of the STEM workforce.
Director: Mangilal Agarwal, Ph.D.
Science Representatives on the Leadership Team: Christoph Naumann, Ph.D., Frederique Deiss, Ph.D. and Ricardo Decca, Ph.D.
Using the techniques of nuclear magnetic resonance, the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Center conducts basic and applied research on metabolism, and on structure-function relationships of biological macromolecules.
Director: Dr. Horia I. Petrache
The School of Science animal care facility, the Science Animal Resource Center (SARC), is maintained to support the research and teaching missions of School of Science faculty and students.
