Annual Research Day is April 17

Sunday, April 12, 2015

INDIANAPOLIS -- The open-house event runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, April 17, in the IUPUI Campus Center, 420 University Blvd.

The annual IUPUI Research Day provides the greater Indianapolis community, as well as IUPUI faculty, staff and students, an opportunity to learn more about the on-going, cutting-edge and multifacted research and scholarly activities at IUPUI. Research Day began in 2009.

“Research Day has become an important part of our campus culture,” said Vice Chancellor for Research Kody Varahramyan. “It has become a great way for faculty, staff, students and their academic, industry and government partners, along with the broader community, to learn about the research enterprise at IUPUI, explore new collaborations and lay the foundation for new partnerships. This is truly an exciting time for research at IUPUI.”

Rockey is the deputy director for extramural research for the NIH, overseeing the development and implementation of policies and guidelines central to the successful conduct of NIH supported biomedical research.

Registration runs from 9 to 9:30 a.m., followed by opening remarks and an official welcome at 9:30 a.m. The winners of the 2015 Research Frontiers Trailblazer Awards will be announced at 9:35 a.m. and given an opportunity to present their work.

Rockey will speak at 10:05 a.m., followed at 11:10 a.m. by JagTalks research and creative activity presentations in Room 405. JagTalks is a series of brief presentations modeled after Ted Talks, and is open to all Research Day attendees.

The first poster session begins at 11:10 a.m. in Room 450 A, B and C, running until 12:40 p.m. A second poster session will run from 1:10 to 2:40 p.m. in the same space.

Faculty may attend research roundtable discussions in Room 409 from 12:10 to 1:10 p.m., but must register in advance. Discussions will focus on access to healthcare, environmental health, public health, education, public safety and quality of life.

The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and the Center for Research and Learning coordinate the poster sessions, often sparking conversations between undergraduate, graduate and professional student researchers. Faculty research poster presentations will highlight the groundbreaking research conducted on campus.

Undergraduate researcher Phillip Witcher, a sophomore in the School of Science, said the event has become a prominent part of the academic year.

“Research Day provides students with a unique opportunity to not only view research being conducted across IUPUI, but also present their own findings,” he said. “In the process, students expand their network of collaborators and attain a different perspective on the world around them.”

The event is free and open to the general public.
