Science Students participate in Jagathon, raising more money for Riley than any other school

Jagathon Partcipants

IUPUI students celebrated the capstone of the 17th annual Jagathon—a 15-hour dance marathon—on March 2. These students have also been denoted as “miracle-makers” as they strive to bring hope to the patients at Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health.

Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett and IUPUI Chancellor Nasser H. Paydar danced alongside hundreds of students to ensure last year’s record of $501,317.24 was not only achieved but surpassed.

Jagathon 2019 ended with a record-breaking total of $605,178.24 during the 15-hour dance marathon.

With 184 School of Science students dancing, together they raised $73,135.71 for the kids. The School of Science was crowned the top fundraising school this year.

Science student student Shelbie Walker served as this year’s Jagathon president.

“Jagathon has allowed me to grow as a leader and give back to Riley Hospital for Children,” Walker said. “As a chemistry major, it has paired nicely in my studies to give me a well-rounded educational experience in both the sciences and philanthropy. The lessons of generosity that I have learned and experienced will be something that will influence me forever.”

Jagathon offers a variety of activities that allow students to get involved if dancing isn’t their fit. A 1-mile run to Riley Hospital, Riley stories, Riley Kid Talent Show, themed hours, and dodgeball are just a few of the activities offered. In addition, colors are assigned to teams creating a Color War. This allows teams to gain points during the event, the most enthusiastic team becoming the winner at the end of the night.

Next year’s Jagathon will be held March 7, 2020.
