Get to know her better in this Q&A with the Student Organization for Alumni Relations (SOAR).
Post Grad Plans: I plan on doing the dual degree program for the MPH-MD program, and then specializing in psychiatry. I worked in group homes for Aspire Indiana. The way people with schizophrenia really interesting” to say “I find the way people with schizophrenia live really interesting. I want to help them have the life they want to have and help them express the potential that they have.
What are your hobbies? I like to do karaoke, and kayak. I usually kayak with my sisters. I’m the oldest out of 8 siblings. My grandma has a house on a lake in northern Indiana, and in the summer we usually go kayaking. One time my sisters and I were kayaking and afterwards, we got on the deck (the deck is really old,) and part of the deck fell in and I fell in with it.
If you could be remembered for one thing at IUPUI, what would that be? I would want to be remembered for getting people involved to do research, and helping people find their passions.
What is your favorite thing about IUPUI I like how you can get so involved at IUPUI. For instance, I’m involved in research and I never thought in a million years that I would like research and then I took Psychology B311, Research Methods. Now, I’m a research assistant for Dr. Kyle Minor’s lab. I found my passion with it. We work with people with psychometric schizotypy, which is on the schizophrenia spectrum. We look at how their symptoms affect their speech and different areas of life. I transcribe data, and I’m also doing a capstone project. I’m looking at perceived social support is effected by negative symptoms and semantic coherence.
What do you like most about being a medical assistant? When patients come in and they are trying to get pregnant, and I get to tell them that the pregnancy test is positive! That is my favorite part of the job.
What are three of your biggest passions? Three of my biggest passions would be helping people with anything I can, psychology, and my family. I come from a really big family, but I would do anything for them. There is 21 years between me and my little brother, we spend every weekend together!
What advice do you have to give to other seniors? Advice I have for seniors would be to not sell yourself short. If you’re passionate about something, there is always something you can do with that passion, so just go for it!
What advice do you have for other students? Advice I have for other students would be take classes that sound interesting for your electives because you never know, that could be a whole game changer for your major.
