In the Fall of 2020, the IUPUI Physics Department welcomed our newest faculty member, Dr. Vivek Amin.
After graduating with a Ph.D. in Physics from Texas A&M University, Dr. Amin completed joint postdoctoral appointments at NIST, Gaithersburg and University of Maryland, College Park. Throughout his career, he has led and contributed to several high impact publications and given over thirty invited talks, including symposiums at the APS March Meeting and the Magnetism and Magnetic Materials (MMM) conference.
Dr. Amin has wanted to be a professor since high school and is now thrilled to mentor students in every level of their education. His concentration of Physics is Condensed Matter Theory, where he and his students focus on using the spin of electrons to create new electronic or ‘spintronic’ devices, with applications to next generation magnetic memories and hardware implementations of artificial intelligence.
During his first year at IUPUI, Dr. Amin was awarded a three year grant totaling $263K from the National Science Foundation to develop efficient methods of electrically controlling magnetic order in ferromagnets and antiferromagnets.
He is happily married with two children and also an avid musician who has built his own home recording studio.
