In a college town, it can sometimes feel like you're living in a bubble as you wait to graduate to the real world. At the School of Science, students are exposed to opportunities that no other school in the state of Indiana can offer.

One of the biggest benefits of studying science at IU Indianapolis is the ability to participate in research as early as freshman year. Our students can engage in research with faculty mentors in the school, on campus, at one of five hospitals on or adjacent to campus, or with companies and organizations in the city.

Some of our top research areas include addiction neuroscience, clinical psychology, developmental/regenerative biology, mathematical modeling, climate change and forensic genetics.

Every department in the School of Science offers research opportunities. You can even pursue research outside your major.

We like to think of the School of Science as the center of your college experience. Being in the middle of a lively city means you're within walking (or biking) distance to many destinations.

Try something new on Mass Ave

Want to find a quirky throw pillow for your dorm room or relax after seeing your favorite band perform? With fun shops like Silver in the City, the city's best pizza at Bazbeaux and Old National Centre concert venue, Mass Ave is one of the coolest places to hang out downtown. Plus, get a delicious taste of science at Sub Zero Ice Cream, where you can watch your custom-made ice cream freeze with the help of liquid nitrogen!

Stretch your legs at the canal

Even in the middle of downtown, there's no shortage of outdoor recreation options. Take a paddleboat through the canal or check out a concert at White River State Park. The Indianapolis Zoo, State Museum and Eiteljorg Museum are all located along the canal and offer free or discounted entrance to students. In the fall, join us on the canal for the Regatta, a festive canoe race that serves as the university's annual homecoming event.

As a first-year science student, you'll enroll in Windows on Science which begins with Bridge Week.

Bridge Week is a five-day program before the start of the fall semester that teaches you the ins and outs of being an IU Indianapolis student.

When you're studying science, it's great to live with people who understand what it's really like to be excited about the discovery you made in lab or the struggle of an organic chemistry final. Science residential-based learning communities cultivate a supportive enviornment that will truly feel like home.

STEM Floor – North Hall

The first year of college is all about new experiences: late night studying, more fun events than you know what to do with and lots of pizza. The STEM Floor is just the place for experiences like these with a diverse group of first-year students who are also studying science, technology, engineering or mathematics. Upperclassmen STEM residential assistants are there to help you unlock the secrets to finding the best food on campus or acing your calculus test. Plus, you'll learn how to unleash your inner jaguar while rowing in or cheering on the STEM Floor team at Regatta!

Women in Science House (WISH) – Riverwalk

The Women in Science House is a community of female science students of various class years and majors. Stay up late watching your favorite movies and studying with friends in the exclusive WISH lounge, share your passion for science through volunteer opportunities, or challenge yourself by making new connections with female mentors in your field. WISH women are serious students who form a lifelong bond through community-based activities, academic support and a shared love of science.
