Applied Sciences Internship Program finishes successful first year

Friday, May 26, 2017

INDIANAPOLIS - ASIP is a strategic effort to link students interested in various industry-related career tracks with quality, paid internship opportunities in the Indianapolis area. During the internship, students complete 10-15 hours per week with local employers during the academic year. Students who participate in internships are more likely to receive an offer of full-time employment and a higher salary than those who took unpaid internships.

Nine undergraduate students completed internships during ASIP's inaugural year at locations throughout Indianapolis including Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency, Health & Science Innovations and the Center for Earth and Environmental Science. They presented a summary of their experiences at the ASIP showcase April 19.

Meghan Mercier, a junior biology student, spent her internship with the Center for Earth and Environmental Science discovering the Science of the Environment (DSE) program.

"My favorite part about my time so far with CEES has simply been the constant learning, Mercier said. "These are some of the smartest people I know, and I've learned about some of the coolest things - from cave-dwelling bioluminescent organisms to what plants are safe to eat if you're stranded in the wilderness. Through this internship I've discovered a love for both the environment and for teaching."

The ASIP program will begin its second year of internships this fall. Although the deadline for applications has closed, students interested in the program should plan to attend next year's showcase to learn more about internship opportunities and sites through ASIP.
