Why study biology?

As a biologist, you can make life better for people around the world.

Biologists have discovered antibiotics and other medicines, given us a better understanding of the cellular processes leading to cancer, and developed new crops. They are also part of the Human Genome Project, which is being used to identify genes and proteins involved in many disease processes.

However, there are still many unknowns. If you study biology, you can be part of new discoveries with the potential to benefit all living organisms.

What will I learn as a biology student?

Biology is a natural science concerned with the study of life. The foundations of modern biology include cell theory, evolution, genetics, homoeostasis, and energy.

While your coursework will depend on the degree path you choose, you’ll learn about the structure, function, reproduction, growth, origin, evolution, and behavior of living organisms and their relation to their natural environment.

You’ll also engage in research, which requires not only evidence and logic, but also honesty, creativity, patience, and openness to new ideas. The problem-solving and reasoning skills you develop as a biology student, as well as an increased understanding of science, will provide a great foundation for approaching any type of work and engaging your community.

What can I do with a degree in Biology?

There’s a reason biology is the most common degree for students pursuing careers in medicine, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, and dentistry, as well as research careers. The knowledge you gain as a biology major from asking questions, carrying out investigations, interpreting data and communicating results prepares you to think critically and develop solutions to challenges and complex problems in any field.

Many career opportunities exist for biology majors, especially now, with the rise of the biotechnology industry and the sequencing of the human genome. Jobs are available directly after the bachelor’s degree (B.A. or B.S.) as entry-level careers in gene sequencing, drug testing and development, immunology, agriculture, and in all molecular, cellular, and developmental areas.

A degree in biology also prepares you for graduate or professional programs in the health and life sciences.
