The Ph.D. in Physics is offered in the Department of Physics.
Areas of research within the Department of Physics include, biological physics, AMO physics, condensed matter physics, and physics education. Interdisciplinary research is common. Strong collaborations exist between our faculty and members of other departments of the School of Science, the IU School of Medicine, the School of Engineering and Technology, and the School of Informatics.
As a graduate student, you will work closely with an advisor and an advisory committee to develop your plan of study. You will complete a substantial research project under the supervision of your faculty advisor. Your thesis is submitted to the graduate school, and you must defend the work in a public presentation followed by a meeting with your graduate advisory committee.
The Ph.D. degree requires a total of 90 credit hours. This includes successfully completing a core group of physics courses, completing 3 specialty courses approved by your graduate committee, and completing an extensive, original research project, culminating in a formal dissertation.
