Pathway to Medicine program FAQs

Find answers to questions specific to the B/MD Pathway to Medicine program.

The program is only open to incoming first-year students. The program is not open to currently enrolled students, transfer students, or any student who is not making the direct transition from high school to first year of college. Applicants must be a U.S. Citizen or have a Permanent Resident Card at the time of application.

Be sure to complete all steps:

  • Apply for admission to IU Indianapolis and select your academic area of interest from the eligible majorsThe IU Indianapolis application for fall admissions is usually available on or around August 1.
  • Log in to your applicant portal to access the B/MD Pathway to Medicine application. You will receive an email from the Office of Admissions with a link to access your applicant portal after you've submitted your IU Indianapolis admissions application.
  • Upload your CV, fill out your application essay, and let us know who will be writing your letter of recommendation.
  • You must complete the IU Indianapolis application and B/MD program application by December 1.
  • Have your letter writer submit their letter of recommendation by December 15.
  • Submit your high school transcripts and SAT and/or ACT test scores to IU Indianapolis. Official transcripts and scores must be received by December 15.

Test scores can be submitted when taking the SAT or ACT or after you’ve taken the tests. When asked which universities to send scores to, use IU Indianapolis’ codes:

  • 1325 for SAT
  • 1214 for ACT

You can apply to any of our eligible majors below:

  • Neuroscience (BS)

  • Psychology (BS)

Although students who pursue the accelerated (3+4) pathway will earn a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies, pathways decisions are made after admission to the program.

You will only be able to access the B/MD application if you have applied to one of the eligible majors listed above.

Yes. Standardized test scores are required for application to the program. The minimum test score for acceptance is SAT 1400 (min 670 math) or ACT 30 (min 29 math). SAT and ACT tests scores are not super scored.

The GPA requirement applies to the GPA at the time of application. All students admitted to IU Indianapolis are required to submit a final high school transcript.

If your final transcripts indicate a significant decline in academic performance, you may have your admission to the B/MD program rescinded.

The B/MD program admissions committee will review the entire application, including the short essay response, CV, and letter of recommendation.

You may choose to study any of the approved majors listed below. Some majors may only be available to the traditional (4+4) pathway or the accelerated (3+4) pathway.

20–25 students will be admitted to the program for Fall 2025.

Yes. All B/MD students are offered the Dean of Science Scholarship, which ranges from $1,000 to $4,000 per academic year, renewable up to four years.

Your are encouraged to review other scholarship opportunities offered by IU Indianapolis and the School of Science.

If you are eligible for the B/MD program, you may also meet the criteria for the Honors College, which maintains its own scholarship programs.

No. IU School of Medicine does not offer scholarships for undergraduate studies, and there are currently no scholarships offered specifically for B/MD students during their medical education.

However, IU School of Medicine offers scholarships to MD students based on academic merit, financial need, and diversity.

Yes. IU Indianapolis and the School of Science offer many scholarship opportunities for undergraduate students.

If you are eligible for the B/MD program, you may also meet the criteria for the Honors College, which maintains its own scholarship programs.

Prior to new student orientation, admitted students will consult with the B/MD program advisor regarding the program track.

In consultation with the advisor, you will determine the pathway that is appropriate based on major interest, timeline to degree, and other relevant factors.

If admitted to the B/MD program, you will be supplied a foundation for medical education through special curriculum, academic advising, mentoring, MCAT preparation, and clinical or research experience.

As a B/MD student, you will gain conditional admission to the IU School of Medicine upon completion of your undergraduate education and completing the program requirements for admission to IUSM.

Yes! All School of Science students may apply to the IU School of Medicine through other admission pathways (e.g. regular admission, early decision program, etc.).

All Science students also benefit from the exceptional advising and preparation provided by the Pre-Professional & Career Preparation (PREPs) Office.

You are required to take science coursework consistent with the required coursework outlined by the IU School of Medicine. If you come to IU Indianapolis with AP, IB, or dual-enrollment credits in coursework required for admission to the MD program, you will be asked to repeat these courses in the School of Science. It is in the best interest of every future medical student to take these courses in college regardless of past experience.

Credits in all subject areas will be reviewed by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions for potential transfer credit. Transfer credit may be used to fulfill the general education core or elective requirements.

You are strongly encouraged to participate in undergraduate research as a means of developing many important pre-med competencies.

However, there is no requirement that B/MD students participate in research.

Following your first year of undergraduate education as a B/MD student, you will  complete an interview with the IU School of Medicine.

The purpose of the interview is to assess your development of pre-med competencies, particularly oral communication. With mentoring from the B/MD program advisor, you will prepare for this interview in advance.

No. Campus placement for the B/MD program will follow the same policies as the IU School of Medicine Early Decision Program. Campus placements are based on applicant preference rankings, number of requests received, and campus capacity; therefore, placement at a specific location is not guaranteed.
