Pathway to Medicine program tracks

The B/MD Pathway to Medicine program offers two tracks — traditional and accelerated.

You will complete your bachelor’s degree in four years through the School of Science and you may choose to pursue a second (double) major or minor from any of the IU Indianapolis programs.

  • Biology BS
  • Biology BA

Accelerated (3+4) Pathway to Medicine

Students completing the accelerated pathway will complete a rigorous, specialized curriculum of study.

You will complete all IU Indianapolis general education core and medical school prerequisite coursework at the School of Science in three years. Upon admission to the IU School of Medicine, the fourth year of coursework will be completed as part of the first year of medical school.

Upon successful completion of your first-year medical courses, you will then receive a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies. Due to the accelerated nature of this program, you will not be able to pursue a second (double) major.

If you are in the accelerated (3+4) pathway, you may elect to extend your education in the traditional (4+4) pathway at any point prior to fall semester of the third year.

Admission to IU School of Medicine

If admitted to the B/MD program, you must follow the program requirements and meet the IU School of Medicine technical standards. Completion of the MCAT and submission of the AMCAS application for IU School of Medicine is required by September 1 of the year prior to beginning the MD curriculum.
