Medicine and Dentistry Pathway program tracks

The B/MD Pathway to Medicine program offers two tracks — traditional and accelerated.

Accepted students will work with the B/MD program director to determine the pathway that is appropriate based on major interest, timeline to degree, and other relevant factors.

The B/DDS Pathway to Dentistry program offers one track – traditional.

Traditional (4+4) Pathway to Medicine or Dentistry

Students will complete four years of education at the School of Science, and the remaining four at the IU School of Medicine or the IU School of Dentistry.

Students completing the traditional pathway may choose to pursue degrees from any of the approved majors listed below.

You will complete your bachelor’s degree and medical or dental prerequisite coursework in four years through the School of Science. You may also choose to pursue a second (double) major or minor from any of the IU Indianapolis programs.

  • Biology BS
  • Biology BA
  • Chemistry ACS Certified BS
  • Chemistry ACS Certified BS – Biochemistry concentration
  • Chemistry ACS Certified BS – Medicinal Chemistry concentration

Accelerated (3+4) Pathway to Medicine

Students completing the accelerated pathway to medicine will complete a rigorous, specialized curriculum of study, where they complete three years of education in the School of Science. The remaining four years of coursework will be through the IU School of Medicine.

You will complete all IU Indianapolis general education core and medical school prerequisite coursework at the School of Science in three years. Upon admission to the IU School of Medicine, the fourth year of coursework will be completed as part of the first year of medical school.

Upon successful completion of your first-year medical courses, you will then receive a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies. Due to the accelerated nature of this program, you will not be able to pursue a second (double) major, but may pursue any IU Indianapolis minor.

If you are in the accelerated (3+4) pathway to medicine, you may elect to extend your education in the traditional (4+4) pathway at any point prior to fall semester of the third year.
